Arunachal to hold 2-day trials for National Basketball Championships

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Basketball Association (APBA) is set to conduct a two-day trial to select the players who would represent Arunachal in the upcoming National Basketball Championships.

The events, for boys and girls, will take place at the Donyi basketball court in Lower Borum near here from August 21 to 22.

Addressing a press conference at the Press Club here on Friday, association president Donyi Eshi Ori said the APBA has finally secured its affiliation with the Indian Basketball Federation (BFI) and they have been invited to participate in events at the national level by the BFI.

“With affiliation finally complete, we have decided to proceed with the player selection trial for the upcoming 72nd National Senior and Junior Basketball Championship. We will also be participating in the Northeast Olympics,” Ori said.

The 72nd Senior National Basketball Championship (First Stage) for the North East zone will be held in Aizawl, Mizoram from September 13, while the junior event is scheduled to start from October 14 in Shillong, Meghalaya.

The North East Olympic Games will be held in Shillong from October 31 to November 5.

This would be the first time the Arunachal cagers would officially participate in a national basketball event.

“It is a huge achievement for the state as well as for APBA to be able to participate in a national level event. It has always been our dream to represent Arunachal at the national level,” he said, while calling on players in the state to participate in the two-day tryout and selection.

Taking the opportunity, Ori also called on the state government to come up with a provision for the establishment of a basketball court in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).

The Doniye basketball court in Lower Borum was built by Donyi with the help of APBA members and a few other supporters.
