Bulawayo basketball league starts next month

FOLLOWING the Bulawayo Basketball Association (BBA) Annual General Meeting held over the weekend, it has been decided that the new league season will start on October 7th.

The pre-season tournament, which serves as the league opener, will be played on September 23.

BBA General Secretary Francis Dube says the association has succeeded in increasing the number of teams that will be in the league this season.

“The AGM went very well, we have a huge influx of teams joining our leagues. The men’s league will have three leagues A, B and C. The ladies will have two leagues, A and B. We are happy that our game is growing and we are privileged to have NASH and NAPH working with us as they power our system league and even national teams,” Dube said.

New teams joining the league will include MSU from the Midlands, Gwanda Rebels, Golden State, Bulawayo City Towers, Ostrich, Catch Them Young and CBC. New members join the assembly and will also get a vote on the BBA board.

One of the main deliberations of the BBA was to stimulate the growth of 3×3 basketball in the country. 3×3 basketball is a new version of the game played by three players sideways and scoring into a basketball hoop. Each game lasts 15 minutes or ends when a team reaches 21 points, whichever comes first.

While the discipline has recently become an Olympic sport and adopted by the African Games, its chairman of the 3×3 basketball commission.
