By
The Clemson University football team works with big game of football, a Dallas-based handcrafted soccer ball manufacturer, to provide game balls that specifically match the preferences of team quarterbacks. The company offers various configurations of the shape and positioning of a ball’s laces, as well as modifications to the ball’s stitching, stripes, and leather type to fit a the size and comfort of the player’s hand.
Big Game has teamed up with Nike, the clothing partner of Clemson, to manufacture custom Nike-branded balls for the school to use during football games. Big Game also has agreements with Adidas and Under Armour, and it provides custom game balls for approximately 85% of NCAA FBS programs, according to Dallas Magazine.
Dan Kolcun, senior development manager at Big Game, toured the Clemson football facility and shared several different footballs with the school’s quarterbacks to choose each pick that best suits their socket. Big Game footballs were reportedly first used during the 2008 college football season; its other current clients include Texas, Alabama and LSU.
“There are many differences in laces, stripes, sizes, colors, different types of leather and [Dan] going to explain the difference to us,” Clemson director of football equipment Nick Yarid said in a video posted on Twitter on Sunday. “He’s going to sit down with our quarterbacks and really pick out what they want and what fits their needs.”
