HERKIMER, NY – There’s a new team to cheer on in town as the Herkimer Originals prepare for their inaugural season, which begins with the opening on October 30.

Dubbed the “OGs,” the Originals will play in the American Basketball Association (ABA), a semi-professional minor league with more than 100 teams nationwide.

Herkimer will play in the Northeast Division with teams from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.

The squad is made up of 18 players, 12 of whom are allowed to dress on match day. Most of the team’s players are from the area and have played college or professional basketball in the past.

The season features a 26-game schedule, with 13 home games and 13 away games, and runs from October 30 to March 6, with playoffs and a chance at national championships to follow.

The Originals will play all of their home games at Herkimer College, with the exception of a November 27 game against the Hornell Bulls, which will be played at Notre Dame High School.

Home game tickets are $ 5 for kids, $ 9 for general admission, VIP tickets are available for $ 18, and ground seats are $ 45.

The inaugural season opener will take place on Saturday, October 30 against the Roc City Lions, with kids dressed in Halloween costumes receiving free entry to the game.

Fun Halloween activities and candy will also be handed out throughout the game.

The name of the team was invented by none other than rock legend Alice Cooper, a friend of the team’s founder and owner, Scott Flansburg.

Flansburg said the two were on the golf course when he found out he had obtained the rights from the ABA to start a franchise.

The story goes that Cooper immediately came up with the name “Originals”, based on the fact that the first iron basketball rim was cast in Herkimer and the first organized basketball game may have been played. in Herkimer in February 1891.

In fact, when Cooper came to the area to perform at the Stanley Theater in Utica recently, he took to the stage for the latest songs wearing a Herkimer Originals jersey (photos in the Story Gallery).

Members of The Originals said they hope to bring an exciting and competitive basketball brand to the region with a friendly, family-friendly atmosphere.
