Kent State Tuscarawas Men’s Basketball Adds Akron North Guard
Kent State University in Tuscarawas announces the signing of a 2021 Akron North High School graduate to its basketball team.
On Monday, Michael Brown, Jr. signed a national letter of intent to play for the Golden Eagles.
Brown, primarily a shooting guard/point guard, was a four-year winner for the Vikings. He also won the First Team All-City League (ACL) as a junior and senior and was North’s top scorer in the 2021 season.
He was named ACL honorable mention as a freshman and sophomore and received the Momentum Award and the Lou Hosfield Award after his senior season. As a senior, his team is tied for first place in the regular season ACL series.
Brown is also very accomplished in track and field where he also achieved four letters and was the ACL Series Champion in the long jump with a jump of 21 feet 4 ¾ inches. As a Thinclad, he won the 2019 Impact Player Award, Breakout Performance and Most Improved Player awards in 2021, as well as a First Team All ACL award. He finished in the ACL second team in the 400m relay and 300m hurdles.
Academically, he was on the Akron North Merit Roll and had a GPA above 3.0 for most of his high school career. He also won the first DECA award, the Valiant Viking award and the Rising Star award.
He will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management at Kent State Tuscarawas.
“Michael Brown is a very accomplished young man who also happens to be wise beyond his years,” said Richard Tharp, head basketball coach for Kent State Tuscarawas. “Michael is a gifted athlete who never backs down from a challenge and is always looking for a way to improve and improve his game. He has great maturity, speed, sees the open ground and is a proven winner.”
Kent State Tuscarawas is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
