Men’s basketball falls to Wooster in NCAC action

GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 19, 2022) – In what began as a matchup between two of the three teams at the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with only one conference loss, the North Coast Athletic Conference men’s basketball team Denison University fell by a final score of 75-60 at home to College of Wooster on Wednesday night.

Both teams started the day looking for their third straight win, but it was Wooster who improved to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the NCAC while Denison fell to 6-7 and 5-2 .

Tyler Miller scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to beat the Big Red while Ricky Radke scored nine points and tied Miller with six boards. John Faller tied Radtke with nine points while Freeman Brou finished with eight points, five rebounds and five assists.

Although Denison trailed nine three times in the first nine minutes of the game and allowed Wooster to shoot 56.67% from the field in the first half, Denison was able to get back into the game and stay competitive thanks to a timely 3-point shot.

The Big Red missed each of their first eight long-range attempts before the first year Cameron Smith knocked down his first 3-point shot of the season to bring Denison back within four at 18-14 with nine minutes left before halftime.

3 consecutive points by Darren Rubin and Miller gave Denison his first lead of the ball game 22-21 with 6:51 left in the period, then a three by Faller with four minutes left tied the game at 27-27.

Four and a half minutes into the second half, Miller hit a 3-pointer to put Denison within one at 46-45 before Wooster responded with 10 straight points, including a big dunk in transition, for go ahead by 11 (56-45) with 11:43 remaining in the match.

Will Hunter hit a 3-pointer to stop the Fighting Scots 10-0 run, then Denison came back within four at 60-56 after a Radtke layup with nine minutes left.

However, Denison continued to go 0 for 5 with four turnovers in the next five minutes and more to fall behind by double digits at 66-56 with 3:50 remaining on the clock.

Denison will finish the week on the road at Ohio Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, then the Big Red will start next week at Kenyon College at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 24.
