Men’s Basketball Signer Mitchell Named Jordan Brand Classic Most Outstanding Player

CHICAGO— University of Texas men’s basketball signing Dillon Mitchell recorded 18 points to lead Team Air to a 118-109 win over Team Flight Friday night at Hope Academy in Chicago. Mitchell was selected as the most valuable player for Team Air.

Mitchell became the 16th player in UT program history to play in the Jordan Brand Classic and the first since Mohamed Bamba and Matt ColemanIII in 2017. The event had been canceled each of the previous two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mitchell, a forward from Tampa, Fla., recently completed his senior season at Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) under coach Kevin Boyle. He is currently ranked the 7th prospect in the nation by ESPN and 11th by Rivals.

Mitchell averaged 12.3 points, 10 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and one steal in his senior year at Montverde. In the GEICO Nationals title game, he had 17 points, 12 rebounds and three steals to lead Montverde to victory.

The Jordan Brand Classic marked the third prestigious guest contest Mitchell has entered in the past month. At the McDonald’s All-American Game on March 29, he started and recorded nine points, four rebounds and two steals for the winning East team. Mitchell was also a member of the USA Nike Hoop Summit team that defeated the World Select Team 102-80 at the 23rd Nike Hoop Summit on April 8. He posted game-high eight rebounds and four assists while adding six points in 24 minutes.
