SPRINGFIELD, MA – Fresh out of their Mid-Atlantic Conference East Coast Basketball League (ECBL) championship, the Western Mass Zombies are already planning the 2022 season, with an upcoming player tryout and fundraising night.
Trials are scheduled for Sunday, September 26 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the South End Community Center, 99 Marble Street, Springfield. The cost is $ 100 to try; registration for a trial slot can be made here.
“The Zombies have just had a great season and are looking to continue building our franchise,” said head coach and general manager Brian Stasaitis. “We are looking to add key elements to our franchise that are ready to get down to business and continue our winning tradition.”
The team have already announced the signing of four key ghosts from the 2021 Conference Championship squad, including guards Tyler Desrosiers and Marcel Brown, who have been named co-captains.
Desrosiers averaged 18.8 points per game, including 22 points per game in the playoffs. Brown averaged 7.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, scoring 11 points per game in the playoffs.
Goalkeeper Robby Jones, the team’s best free-throw shooter at 89.5 percent, averaging 11.5 points per game, and 6-foot-10 center Kevin McLaughlin, who saw just a few minutes the last season, but twice scored 16 points in one game, are also back.
ECBL is known for its fast, end-to-end, non-stop action. The Zombies averaged 123.1 points per game in their first season in the league.
NBA Hall of Fame member Rick Barry, a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary all-time team, has joined the organization as a special advisor to the owner and general manager.
âRick will bring a new perspective to our organization and be a great reference and resource for our players,â said Stasaitis.
Comedy show
An evening of laughter is on the program with a fundraiser for a comedy show at the community center on Saturday, October 23, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show for ages 18 and over are only $ 20 and can be obtained here or by visiting Zombie Lair, 362 Cooley Street, Springfield.
