New OTT smartphone video platform
Canadian company Firstlight Media recently signed a partnership with Smart Communications to deliver an enhanced video experience to the telecom operator’s customers.
Firstlight Media’s fifth-generation cloud-native platform is expected to provide seamless, cross-platform video infrastructure for PLDT Group’s over-the-top (OTT) mobile and home video applications.
This would enable differentiated video experiences and a suite of cutting-edge new features without the complexity of maintaining separate apps for the group’s different brands.

Smart’s GigaPlay app provides free access to specially curated and exclusive live and on-demand sports and entertainment content to subscribers. The new GigaPlay app launched on March 26 at the start of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines’ 84 season.
Downloadable from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, GigaPlay also offers live and on-demand coverage of the biggest local and international sports leagues, including the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, Japan B.League, National Basketball Association, National Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Premier Volleyball League.
GigaPlay’s expanding catalog also includes award-winning international and K-pop music shows and concerts, South Korean drama series, and Hallyu Hangouts sessions, among other awesome content tailored to Filipino passions.
Video is one of the biggest drivers of data usage in the Philippines. In 2021, mobile data traffic on Smart’s network grew to 3,337 petabytes, up 16% from 2020. Smart also recorded 42.6 million active data users in 2021.
