Olson, Aulbach and Callahan named captains of women’s basketball team
Chelsea Olson, Mady Aulbach and Megan Callahan have been named captains by their teammates for the 2021-2022 Youngstown State women’s basketball season, YSU head coach John Barnes has announced.
Olson is a fifth year senior from Westby, Wisconsin, and Aulbach is a third year goalie from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Callahan is in his fifth year at college but only his first at YSU as a transfer from Robert Morris.
âI am extremely excited about our leadership this season,â said Barnes. âChelsea have brought the team to the forefront their entire career, and coming back in their fifth year shows their commitment to the team and YSU. Mady has really grown stronger verbally and has always had an unparalleled work ethic. Am glad the team voted a newcomer to the captain position because Megan is an accomplished, tough, hardworking and unapologetic leader. I am proud of them all for winning this great honor. “
Olson has already established herself as one of the great penguins during her first four seasons on campus. She has been selected three times in the All-Horizon League as a point guard and was named program MVP Ed DiGregorio, the team’s MVP over the past two seasons. Olson was also named YSU Female Athlete of the Year in 2020-2021.
Aulbach has appeared in all 48 YSU games since the start of the 2019-20 season. She led the team with a 3-point goalscoring percentage in the first year, and she placed second on the team with 16 interceptions in 2020-21. It also posted an impressive 2: 1 assist-to-revenue ratio last season.
Callahan played 88 games in the previous four seasons at Robert Morris before becoming a penguin. She scored 110 3-pointers and ended her RMU career eighth all-time with a career 3-point field goal percentage of 0.367. Last season, she started RMU’s last 13 games of the season and led the Colonials with 20 interceptions.
Youngstown State will begin the 2021-22 season on November 9 at Eastern Michigan. The first home game is on November 15 against Akron, and the Horizon League opener is on November 18 in Oakland.
