Razorbacks T14e after Day 1 at NCAA
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira and Segundo Oliva Pinto each shot a 1 over par 71 and the No. 14 Razorbacks are tied for 14th after carding a 14 of 294 to tie for 14th at the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship , played at Garyhawk Golf Club’s Raptor Course (par 70, 7,289 yards).
Arkansas played in the afternoon wave with tee times after 1:20 p.m. and starting at hole 10. Of the top 15 teams, only Texas (11th), Georgia (11th), and Arkansas had departure times after 12:25 p.m.
“I think we did a great job,” said head coach Brad McMakin. “It was really difficult this afternoon. The greens were really firm. We started slowly but they hung on. The rounds of 71 from Mateo and Segundo were fantastic. It was a great team effort. Now we have to go and enjoy it by playing the morning wave tomorrow.
Vanderbilt leads after 18 holes with an above-par 282, followed by Oregon and Auburn at +5, and Kansas and Arizona at +6.
Fernandez de Oliveira and Oliva Pinto had two birdies and three bogeys for their 71 to tie for 16th. Fernandez de Oliveira birdied one of the day’s four on the 18th to make the even parity turn and, after bogeys on his 10th and 15th holes, he birdied on his 17th hole – the par-3 eighth .
Oliva Pinto landed nine pars to start the day, then opened her back nine with two bogeys. However, he birdied back-to-back on his 13th and 14th holes. He dropped a shot on his 16th hole, the par-4 seventh which played the second toughest hole of the first day.
Julian Perico had a similar inside nine to Oliva Pinto. Perico had bogeys on two of his first three holes after the turn. Then, like Oliva Pinto, birdied on her 13th and 14th holes of the day. And, like Oliva Pinto, had a bogey on her 16th hole, the par-4 seventh. Perico fought back to shoot 74 after a tough triple bogey on the 15th hole. He’s tied at 62nd.
Luke Long is tied at 131st (78) and Wil Gibson, who birdied his last two holes, is tied at 143rd (79).
Arkansas will team up with Georgia and Wake Forest again for the second round on Saturday. The team will start at 10am (CT) from hole #1.
OPENING NOTES:
- Arkansas played the par-3 tied for third best among the field.
- Arkansas’ 59 pars were sixth-best among the field.
- Fernandez de Oliveira had one of four birdies recorded on the 18th hole. It was the Razorbacks’ only birdie on their first nine holes.
- The 18th hole was the third toughest hole, playing +0.55 over par and Arkansas played that hole 1 under thanks to Fernandez de Oliveira’s birdie and four pars. The 13th hole was played as the toughest fifth hole (+0.31) and all four Arkansas scorers had pars on the hole each.
