SMSU MEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU to face the alumni squad for ‘Andy Wiersma Day’ today | News, Sports, Jobs

MARSHALL – The Southwest Minnesota State University men’s basketball team opens its 2021-22 season today with an exhibition game against the SMSU alumni team starting at 12 p.m. inside the ‘R / A installation.

The game is part “Andy Wiersma Day” to SMSU. This is the ninth time that SMSU has hosted the Andy Wiersma Alumni Game.

Admission is free to the game, but free will donations will be accepted and all proceeds will go to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The SMSU Alumni team will be made up of some of the best players in the team’s recent history. The expected players are Vinard Birch, Turner Moen, Nate Huot, Jordan Miller, Taylor Schafer, Michael Lee, Joey Bartlett, Kolin Bartlett and Mitch Weg. More former players could be added to the roster later in the week.

Andy Wiersma died in a car crash on July 27, 2008. He was a four-year letter recipient at SMSU from 2002 to 2006, playing in 112 career games with 36 starts. He scored 418 points while grabbing 237 rebounds during his career. He shot 42.6% from the field (135 of 317) including 37.7% from three points (69 of 183).

Following his playing career in 2006, the SMSU men’s basketball program honored Wiersma by renaming his “Mustang Prize” the “Andy Wiersma Mustang Award”. The award is presented annually to an SMSU male basketball player who exemplifies the qualities of a Mustang male basketball student-athlete.

SMSU will host another exhibition match next week by hosting St. Olaf College on Friday October 29 from 6pm.

SMSU opens the regular season on November 12 and 13 at Concordia-St. Paul Classic faces Rogers State (Okla.) In Newman (Kan.). SMSU’s first regular-season home game is Dec. 4 against Augustana.
